Wildlife Kruger National Park

All the Big Five, as well as other large animals such as the giraffe, hippo and many antelope species, are easily spotted in South Africa’s extensive network of parks. This list includes the white rhino, although its black relative is much harder to track down. A common sight in the west of the country is the Cape Mountain zebra, while the leopard is particularly conspicuous in Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

More about Kruger National Park wildlife

South Africa is a prime wildlife destination. All main safari animals are easily seen. Kruger National Park offers excellent general wildlife viewing, and the KwaZulu-Natal parks are best to see rhino. In Sabi Sand, the main focus is on seeing the Big Five; it is famous for its habituated leopard.

Weather & Climate

South Africa’s popularity as a wildlife destination is partly due to its temperate climate, which prompts a lot of blue-sky days. The country’s winter (May to September) sees the sun shine a lot and temperatures hover around 25°C/77°F. Except in the early morning, that is, when the mercury plummets. Summer (October to April) sees rain mainly in the form of afternoon storms and the country heats up, particularly along the east coast and anywhere near the Kalahari.

Best Time to Visit

The Dry season (May to September) is the best time to visit most of South Africa’s parks, including Kruger. The weather is great, the animals obligingly wander around waterholes and alongside rivers, and to top it all off, it’s the low season. The Wet season (October to April) is a less-attractive proposition thanks to the fact that animals tend to disperse into the thick, rain-fed bush, and because of school holidays in December.

More about the best time to visit

The best time to visit South Africa’s parks is from May to September. This is the Dry season and animals congregate around waterholes and rivers. As this is winter, mornings and nights are cold. May and September are wonderful because it is less cold and, especially in September, the wildlife viewing is excellent.

Best Time May to September (All parks)

High Season October to March (Won't feel overly crowded, except for main camps in Kruger during school holidays)

Low Season April to September (This coincides with the best wildlife viewing months)

Best Weather April-May and September-October (Pleasant temperatures and afternoon storms rarely interfere with the safari)

Worst Weather June to August (Cold in the morning and at night)

May to September –Dry Season – Winter

  • Wildlife is easier to spot because there is less vegetation and animals gather around rivers and waterholes
  • There is little to no rain – the skies are clear with most days sunny and fewer mosquitos
  • This is the low season and parks are not crowded, except for Kruger during school holidays
  • It gets cold at night and in the mornings

October to April –Wet Season – Summer

  • After the first rains, the scenery turns green and all looks fresh
  • This is the best time for bird watching, and migratory birds are present
  • Rains are mostly short afternoon showers and seldom really interfere with your trip
  • Wildlife viewing can be quite slow since the bush is thicker and wildlife is more difficult to spot
  • It gets very hot in December, January and February, and parks get crowded during the main school holidays in December

Tips on what to pack on your Southern Africa, Desert Hiking and Safari Tour

1. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must. Put it on always during the trip. Make sure the sunscreen you bring in is non-aerosol. The bands go on later in the evening.
2. Hat
You don’t want your scalp to peel. A scalp sunburn is like the worst, ever. Bring a hat.
3. Comfortable shoes, Sand Boots can be ideal
You’re also going to be on your feet and rocking out. Also, heels are not a great idea — you’ll sink in the sand.
4. Bandana or scarf
This is my desert must. If it’s too hot, you can soak a bandana in water and put it on your neck to cool off during the day. Be aware that it gets windy in the desert and the scarf or bandana can be used as a dust mask on the paths back to the parking lots. I like the infinity scarves that can also double as a shawl if it gets too cold.
5. External battery and phone charger
Your phones are, probably going to die at Desert Trip. And you probably won’t be able to call or text or tweet once everyone is in the field. But, one way to keep your phone alive to snap photos and just in case of an emergency, is to bring along a small external battery. They’re inexpensive and will often give your phone a full charge.
6. Ear plugs
It’s going to be loud. Plan ahead and bring some ear plugs.
7. Hand sanitizer
With tens of thousands of people and walking around in a big field, you’re probably going to want this.
8. Empty Camelback or water bottle
Dehydration is serious business. Take care of yourself, especially in the heat, and bring in a bottle (up to 1ltr) to fill up with water on site. Trust me, you will want this.
9. Sweatshirt or jacket
Even with the warmer temperatures during the day, the breeze can kick in early mornings and after sundown and it can get downright cold. Be prepared with layers.
10. A good pair of Sun glasses
11. Binoculars and a camera with lots of film! For digital ensure batteries are charged- there is no electricity in the bush (we can charge via the cigarette lighter) Please bring something to cover your valuable as it gets wet during highwater seasons (December - May)
12. There will be times when you are exposed to the sun so a thin long sleeve shirt may come in handy.
13. Please attempt to travel as light as possible- space is always an issue on Full Day Safari Trip.
14. Last but not least, a sense of humour …………this is Africa!
